Welcome to the first of what we hope to be an ever-growing celebration of the diversity and creativity of children’s books across Australia.  We have  talks and activities from South Australia’s top children’s authors and illustrators. New York Times bestselling authors Sean Williams and Garth Nix will be launching their latest book. Children’s favourite, Sally Rippin, will be making a guest appearance. The Adelaide Festival of Children’s Books will give children the chance to meet the creators of some of their favourite books and learn about what inspires them to make their stories come alive.

The idea of the Festival was born on a sunny afternoon at Carrick Hill in November, when we realised that its tranquil beauty and cultural heritage made it the  perfect location for an author talk on a warm summer day. From that idea, a team of authors, illustrators, literary professionals and enthusiastic volunteers helped to grow the idea into a possibility. With the addition of Flinders University as a partner and host for the second day, we submitted our application for funding to the Australia Council for the Arts.

In September we received the incredible news that our funding had been approved and we are extremely grateful to the Australia Council for the Arts for making this Festival possible. Since that time it has been a race to the finish to ensure that everything comes together to make the two days a success and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who has worked hard to bring the Festival to life

So, please read through the programme. Enjoy your day at Carrick Hill and, if you are lucky enough to be invited to Flinders University on Monday 23rd October, I promise you will have a wonderful experience.

For all you young readers and budding authors and illustrators out there, come along and meet the people who put the words and pictures on the books you love, and learn how you too can one day…

...Paint a picture. Spread the word.
